5 Homemade Clarifying Shampoo Recipes For Oily Hair

If you’ve tried making your own hair and beauty products you’ll already know the benefits of using all natural ingredients. Firstly, you get the advantages of all the vitamins found in fruit and herbs for example before they’ve been preserved and then there’s the satisfaction of knowing exactly what you’re putting onto your hair, mostly chemical free (unless you use a product from your kitchen with chemicals already in the ingredients).

Of course, there’s the cost saving too, homemade products are always less expensive than shop-bought products.

One of the reasons why there aren’t any 100% natural clarifying shampoos available to buy is because fresh ingredients have a short shelf life so every product on the market contains preservatives.

If they didn’t have preservatives in them, they’d need to be thrown away after just a few days. So it’s impossible to buy something that’s entirely homemade – and really, anything without chemicals has to be better for you so go ahead and make your own

We’ve come up with some fantastic homemade clarifying shampoo recipes, especially for oily hair. Each of these recipes has been tried and tested and work wonders to get rid of greasy, lanky and dull hair. Try some of them at home and see which ones work best for you.

We’ve also managed to remove the baking soda ingredient that you so often find in homemade shampoos for oily hair. This is because baking soda is renowned for stripping hair, removing much of the natural oil and is very drying.

It’s also terrible for colored hair because it dulls it down so if you’ve got oily hair that has been colored, don’t use baking soda anywhere near your hair!

Apple & Lemon Clarifying Shampoo

Apple & Lemon Clarifying Shampoo

This one smells absolutely delicious with the combination of fresh apple, citrusy lemon and added essential oil. Lemon is excellent for combatting an oily skin as it has drying properties but because it’s natural, it’s still gentle.

Be careful not to use this one too much on colored hair because lemon juice is notorious for turning hair a lighter shade! The vinegar content restores the PH balance of your hair, closing your hair’s cuticles so it looks shiny and healthy.

You’ll need:

  • 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp of Lemon Juice
  • 30 ml of Lukewarm Water
  • Dried apple rings

Mix the ingredients together and shake them up in a bottle. The apple rings should be large enough that they don’t fall out when you pour out this shampoo; they add a wonderful scent to the mixture.

Spread the shampoo over the scalp area and massage in, paying attention to the roots. Make sure the shampoo gets to the base of your hair too. Rinse well and finish with a conditioner best suited to your hair type.

We’d love to know what you’ve tried and the results you’ve achieved. Hopefully, your scalp will feel super-clean and your hair will look like you’ve just stepped out of the hair salon.
